Theme: Empowering Marginalized Female Students in Computing: An Inclusive Curriculum and Research Mentorship Initiative for North-East Nigeria
Location: Adamawa State, North Eastern Nigeria
Duration: 5 Days
Number of Participants: 50 Female Students
This project presents an inclusive curriculum and mentorship framework aimed at empowering historically marginalized female students in North-East Nigeria to overcome significant barriers in accessing computing education and research opportunities. The region’s long-standing challenges—insurgency, poverty, and cultural constraints—have exacerbated gender disparities in computer science programs, resulting in low enrollment and underrepresentation of women, with less than 5% of Computer Science professors being female. To address these issues, the framework integrates Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles into computing curricula, emphasizing real-world community-based research projects that address local needs. Additionally, it fosters mentorship programs that connect female students with industry professionals, senior researchers, and alumni to provide academic guidance, career development, and networking opportunities. A key feature of this initiative is the creation of an "Equity Lab" that ensures female students have access to essential computing resources, including high-performance tools and research grants, regardless of their economic background. Aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education, this project aims to bridge the gender gap in computing education in North-East Nigeria. The framework not only prepares female students to thrive in the field of computer science but also empowers them to use their skills to address societal challenges in their communities, promoting long-term positive change.
Theme: Advancing Computing Research - Unraveling Data Science, ML Algorithms and Applications
Location: Adamawa State, North Eastern Nigeria
Duration: 5 Days
Number of Participants: 60 Female Students
The workshop was the first activity conducted by this Organization. it served as a unique and valuable opportunity for undergraduate girls in Northeast Nigeria who are interested in pursuing careers in computing research. The workshop provides participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence that they need to succeed in graduate school and beyond. The workshop theme is "Advancing Computing Research - Unraveling Data Science and ML Algorithms and Applications". This theme reflects the importance of data science and machine learning (ML) in computing research today. The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to learn about these two important areas of computing research and to develop the skills and knowledge that they need to pursue careers in data science and ML research. The workshop is organized by a team of experienced researchers and educators who are passionate about supporting and encouraging women in computing research. The team is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where participants can feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their ideas.
